Sichuan Province
is located in
southwest China, covering an area of 487,000 square kilometers. Its
eastern part is the Sichuan Basin surrounded by lofty mountains, with the
rest hilly land and low hills. Its west area is highland of West Sichuan,
and the north area, part of the main body of Qinghai and Tibet plateau,
while the south area is northern section of Hengduan Mountain Ranges. Most
of the rivers belong to the Yangtze River System. The Sichuan Basin
and West Sichuan have sub-tropical humid and sub-tropical highland climate
respectively. Sichuan is gifted with lush mountains and
exquisite waters, and abounds in historical and cultural resources. Its main
scenic spots and historical sites include Mount Emei, Huangling Temple,
Jiuzhaigou and Golden Buddha Mountain.

Jiuzhaigou
To heal he went into a pristine mountain region, home of
Jiuzhaigou,
a spectacular national park which is more of
a fairyland and is
the home of nine Tibetan villages on about
100 small lakes.
The valley is 50 kilometers in length, and the
altitude averages
7,000 feet (not the 12,000 foot average like Tibet) and the
air was super clean.

Qing Yang Gong
Taoist (Daoist) Temple, Chengdu
Chengdu is an ancient capital city located in
Sichuan province, Southwest China. The city and surrounding area has many
historical temples and a rich heritage including the first use of natural gas
(618 BC), one of the world's earliest still functioning irrigation systems (250
BC) and the world's first relief printing system (680 AD). The province is also
famous for hot and spicy food and is considered the birthplace of tea culture.
Qing Yang Gong or the 'Grey Sheep' temple bustles
with activity especially on the weekends. Local people come to burn incense,
light candles, make prayers, take part in ceremonies, visit psychics, drink tea
all day long and chat with friends.

About this series.
Michael's 'Sichuan Province, China', and 'Tibet' were
created in May and
June of 2004. He scheduled three weeks to create in Sichuan Province, on
the foothills of Tibet in western China, and two weeks in Tibet, a separate
sponsored series. However, after photographing in the pollution in Chengdu
city, where he spent many days in their unique temples and parks, he developed a
lung condition. Having been warned not to go to the extreme altitudes of
the Tibetan regions without being in excellent physical condition he had to wait
out the time and heal, thus having only a few days in Tibet once that happened. Therefore he
has much more work of Sichuan Province than Tibet.
