Sunny and 80, 1pm till 6:20
Paul O. and I (me 5, Paul 3)

Met Paul at 12:30 to light wind and thin layer of clouds. Report was not good, and Vic, a kayaker from Sutherland, reported a tough day. But he saw busters. Same with another guy that was leaving. He pointed to the right side just past the dam and said the whole side had busters. That's where we started. In short order, after prayer for wisdom fish mercies and luck, a big school of all 2 pounders started busting within range, and we both hooked up. Me on this gun fish. Paul twin fluke system he learned about. They were both about 2 1/2 pounds, I've got a great photo of doubles. But that was it as far as busters that would come nearby. Funny, Paul said since in happened once it should happen again. I laughed at loud and said I wished that was the way it was, and I hoped so. But I'd never seen such a large group attack with such ferociousness. And unfortunately It didn't happen again either. Paul went to drop shot, and single fluke, as the double was giving problems. I finally went to jerk bait, after trying the S Spook, whopper popper, and gun fish for a couple hours. 4 inch white jerk bait, suspended, didn'tt produce after quite a few cast so went to floater, black top chrome sides and got 2. Tied on a suspended one, same color pattern as the floater, and ended up getting a limit on it. Finished the day over towards the ramp, fishing the 8 inch punker, Nada. Paul went small whopper popper. Nada

Worked my way back to the buoy line, working the backs of each cover, Plopper, S. Spook, frog and even the 3.5" Gunfish, nada. Even tried a 7" Senko still tied on from the Delta.

San Vicente September 27, 2018. Took the answered prayer out and arrived about 1 pm. Went to the usual points, toll road arm. Second point in, fishing the BPS medium size Plopper. Worked around the point, then threw it between the shore and a bush and got a very nice 3 1/2 pounder on the BPS. Continued working down but the lure started falling apart. First the front blade, then the back blade.

3.5# on my new BPS plopper style lure, fell apart in short order though.

Started throwing this Super Spook, then got kicked out by the Ranger. Even though there was no water-skiers, he said it was a water skiing special zone. I politely told him that's ridiculous, and I got the name and number of his supervisor in charge of the lakes. I called said supervisor, but went voicemail. Later on the Ranger said he talked to his supervisor and they agreed it's ridiculous to kick out fisherman if there's no skiers and they wouldn't do that from now on).

So I left the area anyway, before working all the points back, and went out of the bay and fished the left side from the main point back about halfway. Nada but a big blowup on the spook. Then went to the island, left side of the little island, and worked the hump and got a nice one about 2 pounds, on the super spook, working around the point. Worked around the point, saw breakers out about 100 yards and ran and worked them for Nada. Then back to the point and worked my way back to the Hump.

Wanted to work the launch ramp cove at dusk so ran over there but lost my Lunker Punker over the buoy line on a branch on Shoreline. Will have to go back when I have more time and swim and get it next Thursday. Got too late to do it.

UPDATE: Bummer, it was not on the branch, $90 for new ones now, up about $30 from four years ago.

Boat: Answered Prayer
Sunny and 88, noon til 6:45,
Paul 2, me 1 (a 6.8 on frog)

Met Pastor Paul there At noon. We started ramp at Cove, worked our way around about halfway, then ran to the left main point by the island, and worked off the point by 100 yards or so. Spinner baits and swim baits. 12’ of water. Some guy killed them there on spinner baits three weeks ago. Nada

Came in and worked the point in the cove. Paul got One on a Senko. I was thrown the medium sized Plopper , and broke the prop off when I slammed it into the trolling motor on casting. I put on the BPS whopper Paul gave me last Christmas, the same size, it has props on front and back. It’d been at the Frameshop until recently, and I was going to use it anyway. upsized the front hook and small heavy duty swivel. Found it churns up more water, and does not spin around. And since it has more drag, it is harder to work/reel in.

Worked 200 yard stretch towards the dam, towards the first point and I got a 6.8 pound topwater fish on the Gavacho frog in the corner. Was in 10 foot of water, hunkered down on a 5 foot boulder. Thank you Lord. We ran to Conejo arm and worked the flats, which are deeper now, as the water is up 5 feet from three weeks ago. I stopped at the point on the right first, and picked one up on this new Plopper. About a 2 1/2 pounder. Work to the far back, fresh tules growing all over, in 2’ of water. Nada

Worked around in out of the cove, chatting with a gentleman from Texas in a rental boat, and worked our way to the first major point. I got blown up on running the whopper popper by the motor on the point. Sun was getting lower, so we ran towards bathroom Cove but two boats were there, so we ran halfway to the back and started in the shadows work and back. I got blown up on big time on the super spook. But that was it for that whole stretch, I decided to leave that area about 200 yards short of bathroom cove. Stopped at the main point at the beginning of the arm, the prettiest point in the history of bass fishing, but got Nada. Ran to the docs in Fished the rock pile left of the ramp for five minutes while Paul got the van. Nada

Solo, 4 - 3 Cream S.Spook, Buzzbait w/ fluke trailer

San Vicente September 6, 2018. Finished installing the new Minn Kota 80 pound trolling motor that I got from Larry Akers son-in-law Eric, the day I left to go teach in Carmel. Mike wade canceled, second time in a row, this time a friend was in the hospital. Last time he had a call to p/u his repaired boat trailer. Got to the lake around noon and went to Toll Rd. arm. Sunny and 88. Grasses disappearing, not to top of water anymore.

Started the first major point on the right, threw the Punker on the flats. Nada. Motored to the next one and tried that point, then slowly worked my way along the shoreline to the far back. took five hours to work it all. Started getting them on the super spook as I worked the largest cove in the back right, maybe second from the end after getting three blowups with the frog. Actually before the point, along the edge where are usually get them actually.

First three bass  landed was on a Super Spook. Frog ate a frog again.

First was a three, which the lure got stuck on the edge of the boat and he flipped off as I lifted him out. five minutes later, a four pounder. Sweet. Caught a two pounder just before it ends. Started working the way back out, now shadows, all the way back to the point at aqueduct arm, then around into aqueduct arm and got one on a buzz bait about 100 yards in. Finished at the ramp Cove, usual spot, but had no time to properly work it with the punker. Ranger kicked me out 10 minutes later.

Otay Lake

Boat: 14 aluminum
Sunny, 11 a.m. til 7:15, water 81.
Solo, 3 1 gunfish buster, 2 frog fish

Was to meet Mike Wade at 8 a.m., but he canceled due to having to pick up his refurbish trailer for his boat. Got to the lake around 11 and decided to fish from the ramp to the buoy line. Lake is lower, half the ramp was closed, Grasses up to the surface along most of edge, looked great. Zero hits though, frog, med WP on the outside edges. Some busters here in there too far away. Got to the buoy line and threw Biggar bauts far into closed area as I could. Nada. Buster appeared in front of the boat on the buoy line and through the gun fish on it quickly and caught a 3 pound her. Sweet. 12:30 Started running towards Harvey s but motor kept quitting, running rougher every week. Get it started and it would quit again when I got to full speed, would take 10 minutes to restart, decided to just run it on medium and it seemed to be the answer. Went back to the ramp area and fished the small dock Cove and worked towards fingers, more frog, more WP. Nada. Rent to entrance to Harvey s right side started working same bits. 2:30 As I worked into the arm got blown up on when the frog went under Tule clump. Ferocious fight getting him out of the Tules and into the boat. ended up being a nice four pounder. TUL.

Kept working along the shore, and added the kick tail frog solid body and the kick tail shad to my repertoire. Got blowups but nothing stuck. Also the buzz bait, with kick tail Shad as the trailer. Nada.

Eventually worked up to the big Cove on the right, and I ve been thinking about Thom Cosgrove and how he d been lately, ensure enough I ran into him at his new Lund boat at the Cove entrance. He got a few on the spoon, and 2 On an Ima stick bait. Chatted for about 10 minutes, then he made a run out of the area and I worked into the cove and back out. Nada. Ran back to the entrance of Harvey s and started over. Sun 1/2 hr. To set. Worked out about halfway back to the Cove when the lake ranger came by and kicked us off. Sunset was 715, and that s about the time I got back to the ramp. Tom is there finishing up cleaning his boat and we chatted some more, while I unloaded my boat. Was only his third time out with his boat. His parents are taking up so much of his time, mom on her last leg, gave her one month to live he said. Dad had to quit driving, too many accidents, he s 91. He wants to hit the Sierras in the fall, told him maybe I d go with him.

Wed, Aug. 22nd
Lake Hodges

Boat: 14 aluminum
Mike Wade and I - ZIPPO for each of us.

Lake Hodges August 22, 2018. Met Mike at his house at 6 AM. We drag the aluminum boat out from behind Mike shop, and got to the lake and was fishing by 7 AM. Started on the flats Just east of the ramp in the corner, and worked our way to the far corner throwing top water baits, frogs whopper Plopper's and buzz baits. No hits whatsoever. Probably took two hours. No wind. Ran to the dam, started left side at the buoy line, and started working East. Same top water baits, then spinner bait for me. Make dried chatter bait and square bill crawdad. Nada. Got to the first major Cove and a guy and his wife were sleighing them on lizards in 5 to 20 feet. I tied one on, and mike a tube, and tried for another half hour along shorelines further east for Nada. Ran to another couple of smaller points east for more Nada.

About 130 took a break back at the docks. Had lunch. Then ran past the Narrows to wear it widens, left side shallows, and work from there to the point on the south, then across to the other side of the big Cove, working on the Westside rock pile, on around to the tree line point on the east, and worked our way further east towards the shallows, then called it a day at 3:30. I mean mostly the spinner baits, and Mike the buzz bait, a stick bait and a chatter bait.

Wed, Aug. 15th
Barrett Lake

Herbert 2, d/s, me 6, mostly buzzbait.

Picked up Herbert at 7:30 got the lake 8. Laurie met us at the gate. Said half they would only be $40 When I asked about a senior discount, kiddingly. Opted for full day. Only four boats out, one was with two tubers. Started working the dam, east corner, wind was pretty strong already. Looking grasses and cheese all along the shore, but they wouldn't touch the Frog. work the shore to the area across from the dock, where I got a nice one on a spinner bait finally. 38 ounce white and chartreuse, with the bass pro shop 4" Shad 10 am.

Continued working down to the first big point, and around it into the big Cove. Got a nice blowup on the Frog, no sticky. Far end of the cove giant boulders and great looking cheese, Nada on the frog. At 11 got another nice one on the spinner bait. Just before leaving that area Made a run to the back of Hauser and started in the far end, lots of cheese, depth 2 feet. Work the frog some more, and Herbert was throwing drop shot at this point. At noon the west winds came up. Big flats, so a great buzz bait area, and has worked well back there before, this time of year, so threw it and got another nice bass at 1 PM, bringing it through some live brush 6', textbook. had a couple others hit it but got off. Herbert had a nice explosion on his frog, just after landed at the base of some tall grass/tulles, a loaner from me, but no sticky.

We ran back out of the end by three or 400 yards and worked her way back to the end with frogs drop shot and buys bait. At 4:00 PM Right after we took a break for lunch, Herbert finally got one on the drop shot. On a fluke. Two different colored four inch worms didn't work for him. I continued with the buzz bait, but no luck. Then we made a run to Pine arm, stopping at Herbert's honey honey hole for fun, but the water's 30 foot lower than when we fished it years ago, When it was full.

We continued to the back of time, and it looks very froggy, and I tried the kick tail Shad, the frog, and finally went buzz bait and started getting hits and then fish, a couple of dinks and then a 2 1/2 pounder. Herbert put a buzzbait on but no luck. We work back there for about an hour and then decided to head out front as the sun was setting soon. We saw no one Since two boats at Becky's cove at 1 PM.

I wanted to throw the Plopper on some points on the right side back at the split, and that was wise because I was getting five and six pounders every few cast, four of them. All of them got off, the first never stuck, the next 3 I fought, one up to the boat. Lost her while trying to get the net ready, Herbert did not have the speed to help. Dang.

Got back to the docs after we saw Laurie coming out. Was 7:50 I offered to lock the gate for her, and then she showed me how to do it and gave me the lock, saving her a trip out to the highway. She said we could fish on the docks as long as we wanted, and after loading the car threw the Plopper for another five minutes or so around the docks for Nada.

Herbert treated me to a Carl's Jr. burger, and helped me with my iPhone, the battery was not holding its charge, even though it was brand new- only one day old. Now works fine.

Wed, Aug. 7th
San Vicente Lake

Mike W. 0 2, me 3, med WP

Got two nice ones out of three, one a little over 4 off point in Kimball on Plunker, and another off point in back of Kimball’s, right side near buoy line.

Another on WP, med. size, headed into other back cove across from Kimball’s, that set of rocks is killer.

Mike tossed buzzbait quite a bit, lost at least two on the jump, maybe three.

I Blew a monster in 20’ of water on the Punker at dusk, ramp honey hole. Took my eye off the lure, felt weight for one second that could not budge and it left a bathtub of water movement. Dang.
