The enigmatic observer. That is probably another good side-title for an artist like me. (We can add it to the ‘light chaser’ title I claimed for myself in the Tuscany calendar of ‘02.) The mystery observer/worker. I’m so blessed to be one as ‘people watching’ is a favorite pastime of all of ours, right? Why would anyone want to sit inside a restaurant on a nice evening when they can see (and be seen by) others outdoors? I’m observed as much as I observe. But I know what the people do for work -at least of the workers in these scenes. But they wonder not only why I’m getting a big camera out and mounting it on a tripod- ‘so professional’- but who am I and who am I working for? Is it for a magazine? That’s what they usually suspect. And am I a German? That’s also what most guess. No one suspects that I’m just a Californian artist… of German descent.
