 "Venice 'Old Armory' at twilight"

     Venice has all of the microcosms of a ‘big city’ to it.  It’s just that each section is considerably smaller.  It has its rich posh hangouts and its low end collegiate restaurant area, its’ 5 star hotel streets/canals and its low-end B&B areas.  (Bed and Breakfasts- the designation in Europe, and some here in the U.S., were you rent a room in a house that includes a breakfast, saving you many ‘Euros’, as the money is now called.  It’s cheaper than an inexpensive hotel usually- and much more interesting as it’s someone’s home.)  This area I was working in, as well as most areas outside the Grand Canal, was a working class neighbor hood near the ‘armory’, an Italian military area that used to store many warehouses of ammo for their defense.  As with all of these ‘off the beaten’ path areas, life slows to a crawl.  Neighbors stop to talk politics and hear about what the price of corn was at the local outdoor market that day.  These men could have been finding out who had caught more fish on the incoming tides of the day.  It’ a great time to be outdoors working for an artist such as myself.
