"Michael Seewald's
photographs blur the boundary between traditional
photographer and painter. Michael's keen sense of balance, use of color, and
stylistic photography when around water and other movement, captures a
feeling of nature in ways perhaps no other medium can. For example, in "Blue Bottle,
Venice, Italy" (see Venice series), the time-lapse photograph smoothes the movement of
water within the canal to produce a texture of great beauty and mystery."

Carrara marble quarry '99
Marble production, this is all solid marble.
Check out the full size bulldozers.

"This one is very interesting, not just artistically, at least to me, but also story wise. It was taken on my 1999 trip to Tuscany, my first of two there (well, I've made art here more than that, but specifically/only that is), while I was up in the Carrara mountains. It's where the marble came from for Michelangelo's famous statue he carved of 'David'.

I had to sign my life away to get into the quarry to make the photos, and if were not for a friend I'd made there, a sculptor named Boutros Romhein, even that connection would not have been made. It's very dangerous as there are straight drop-offs that are two and three stories deep, as indicated by the bulldozers for scale in the back of the photo." MS

Here is the link to my friends Facebook page, he also teaches marble sculpting, and has accommodations on premises. Wonderful guy, and his wife Barbara is special too.

Carrara marble quarry II '99

Seewald states "If you notice, this is now below the section that I had photographed above. This shows another, lower portion. The bulldozer at the bottom of the photo, above, is now the one in the middle here. The very upper bulldozer, up near the ceiling, is now not visible from this lower angle.

The 'ghost guy' is the foreman's dad, and as everyone knows, dad's never really retire. Here, he was yelling down to his 45 year old son telling him how to do such and such. My Italian is not so good, but I could tell he was barking orders.

The ghosting is a trademark style of mine, something I came across in the early seventies, and have been fine tuning it ever since."
