April, 1991- We are in this photo. The ambulance in the bottom
left, seen in it's entirety is where we were placed just after this
picture was taken. We are still on the sidewalk in the group on the
bottom left, before we were put on stretcher and placed in the ambulance.
The article says she ran a red light, but she did not. She came
down the hill from behind us and hit us while we all stood still in line
to turn left.
That's why our rear ends were all crushed in. The young man in the
Volvo is mentioned, Curtis James Becker. He worked at VG's doughnuts
in Cardiff. We just went there 10 years later and they said they
still remembered him. A memorial used to hang there but has since
been removed.
In the hospital we overheard one of the elderly ladies in Betty Dixon's car say she told her she was
going too fast down the hill. No one knows what exactly happened,
but many of the elderly forget which is the break and which is the gas
pedal in emergencies. New drivers probably do the same in their needed moment of
instant rectification. Curtis James Becker and Bertha Holley, may
you both rest in peace.
