Death contemplates the old man, Mombassa,
Kenya, Africa, 2002


After working the higher plains around Nairobi I decided to fly to Mombassa where I heard tropical weather and interesting architecture would be awaiting me.  The dollar goes pretty far there and I got a round trip flight and a room in a three star ocean front hotel for three days, all for a hundred bucks!  I worked the older part of the city where the place was mostly Muslim.  The little alleys held innumerable possibilities but strong light made the pickings slim for my style of work. Entering a covered market I noticed the soft light, if only something of interest could be found.  The sleeping merchant was just such a find and an unaware spectator meandered into the scene adding the touch that seemed to be missing.
