Michael, per student request back in 2007, has begun teaching a portrait class.  For many decades he made his living, and subsidized the gallery income, by shooting award winning portraits, weddings and commercial work.  If needed, he took his lighting on location to the clients home or church, but his specialty was really in his environmental work using 'natural light', which is also all the rage. Here are a few examples.

"Once again, Michael knocks it out of the park with a very informative one day class which combines classroom training and real world on the job shooting. In the morning we studied in front of his studio with a handout that was packed with valuable info. After a working lunch, we applied our newly found knowledge by taking turns directing/posing/adjusting the lighting and shooting numerous models (male and female, young and not so young) that he brought in during the rest of the day. We learned all the key elements of outdoor portrait photography in one day. Amazing! It was fun, intense and packed with reinforced techniques. For myself, it was a true awakening to how to really do portraits, for a bargain price.

...I don't know what it is about Michael, but he is so easy to learn from. I soaked it all in like a sponge....Michael is spot-on with his critiques in a matter of fact way. Very blunt but not disrespectful. He does not waste my time!

For me, it was worth at least double what I paid...went from Zero to Hero in one day!...This class has given me the confidence to "charge" for my photos from now on.

Michael, I can't thank you enough!"

Generally, only 6 students per class.

Cost is only $295 and will be held once or twice a year.
Runs from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m..

Dear Seewald grads, just like you did with your first class, you know you will walk away a much more confident photographer, whether you have been making portraits of folks already or not.

The class agenda:

9 a.m. till 12 - Refresher on compositional rules we've learned and
how it applies to photographing people;
The 40 + rules needed in the making of great portraits;
How to sell yourself;
How to get model releases and how to find models, etc..
How to triple your sales and pay for the class from you next job alone!

Lunch 12 to 1 at the gallery, a deli with great sandwiches is right downstairs, second level.

1 to 4 . A location shoot with live models (beats dead ones!) single persons, couples, families, animals/ it varies depending on whom Michael can get to volunteer to model.

You will learn HOW TO DIRECT the models. (each student will direct the models themselves, under Michael's tutelage, NOT just follow Michael around and shoot his great poses like his first portrait class did- live and learn).

4 to 5 - Recap of lessons learned back at gallery and download of images for model presentations.

Materials list:

Snacks, water
Pen and paper
Camera and longer 'portrait' lens, 80mm to 120mm.

    "...Michael is the real deal, he is out there making art and he conveys his passion for photography and his love of life.

    Michael teaches from the heart and is willing to learn from his students too. I would recommend the portrait class to experienced hobbyists and to professionals.

I think it would be too much to expect a novice to enjoy the class; you need to have basic understanding of composition, the magic of light and the operation of your camera. (thus the need for Seewald's photo 'fun-shop' weekend first)..."
