Well, the party started two weeks earlier, with a run up to Placerville to get some of the best libations, wine wise, known to man. Nello Olivo wines.

at the Nello Olivo tasting room, Placerville.

First I met up with collector Jon Zwanziger in Sacramento and we drove up to the mountais east of there, to the tasting room in Placerville. It's below a historical building, now a restaurant, called the Sequoia Inn (pic above).

Jon was introduced to Olivo wines at the Placerville
tasting room first, and got to meet Ivan Olivo. Ivan was  nice enough to hold a wine tasting at last years Christmas party down here in Del Mar last year. Was good seeing him again.

Nello's wine cellar.

Then we went to Nello's home/winery and picked up a few cases. Nello showed Jon around (I'd been there before) and opened some special bottles for us to try. Jon loved them all and ended up getting a case of assorted winners too. My favorite was the 2011 Sagrantino.

It is grown primarily in the village of Montefalco Umbria, Italy, where Nello is from. (I've done a series in Umbria, and had it there. Nello's runs $100 a bottle, and after tasting it, you'll know it's worth it. I added a few bottles to my collection for opening night, to treat my collectors/sponsors with- they are special and deserve special treatment, right? Right... and well they loved it).
